July 29
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) along the Arakawa River between Senju Shinbashi Bridge and Nishi-Arabashi? Bridge, from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. (10,000 pieces). If the wind is above 8 meters per second, the event will be postponed until the next day.

(1) Subway Chiyoda Line, Hibiya Line, or JR Joban Line, to Kita-Senju? Station, then walk 15 minutes. (2) Tobu Isezaki Line to Kosuge Station, then walk 15 minutes.


July 31
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) on the Sumida River, centering on Sakurabashi and Kototoibashi Bridges, and on Komagatabashi and Umayabashi Bridges, from 7:10 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (20,000 pieces in total). In the event of heavy rain or strong winds, the event will be postponed until the next day. Should it heavily rain on that day (Aug. 1), the event will be canceled.

Subway Ginza Line, or Toei Asakusa Line, to Asakusa Station (Other stations close to the sites to see the fireworks are: Honjo-Azumabashi? Station on Subway Toei Asakusa Line; Ryogoku and Asakusabashi stations on the JR Sobu Line; or Narihirabashi Station on the Tobu Isezaki Line.)

Asagao-ten (Exhibition of morning glories) is held at Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda Ward from 6am. (Morning glories usually can be seen until around 10 or 11 a.m.) A class on making pressed "asagao" flowers for children will be held from around 9:30 am to 10:30 am.

July 30-Aug.1
Furusato Kumin Matsuri (Setagaya Summer Festival) will be held at Baji Koen (park) in Setagaya Ward. A fife and drum band will play on July 31 and Japanese drum beating is set from noon to 5:45 p.m. Bon Odori and "Awa Odori" folk dancing will be held from 6 to 8:40 p.m. On Aug. 1, a charity auction starts from 11 a.m. and folk dances, a flamenco dance and drum beating will be performed from 11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many vending stalls will be set up from noon to 9 p.m. on July 31 and Aug. 1.

(1) Tokyo Den-en Toshi Line to Sakura-Shinmachi? Station, then walk 15 minutes. (2) 30 minutes by bus for Seijo-Gakuen?, or Chofu-eki Minami-guchi from Shibuya Station, then get off at the Nodai-mae bus stop.

Aug. 1-3
Hachioji Matsuri in Hachioji, a one-hour train ride from Shinjuku Station to the suburbs of Tokyo. Major events include: an exhibition of ice carvings from 3:50 to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 1; a parade of floats and portable shrines from 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 2 (3 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 3); Japanese drum beating from 3 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 2; "Minyo-nagashi" (parade of folk dancers) from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 2, and a "shishimai" dragon dance from 3 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 3. (Note: A fireworks display and fire-crossing ritual will be held on Oct. 4 this year.)

Aug. 1
Bon Odori folk dancing open to all will be held in the open space by the Shinagawa Prince Hotel, across from Shinagawa Station in Minato Ward, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Should it rain, the event will be cancelled.

Setomono Matsuri (ceramic fair) near Suitengu Shrine in Chuo Ward, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Shrine stands on the corner where Shin-Ohashi-Dori? Avenue and Ningyocho-Dori? Avenue intersect.

Aug. 2
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) on the banks of the Edogawa River, from 7:15 pm to 8:30 pm (14,000 fireworks). In the event of rain or strong wind, the display will be postponed until the next day.

Bon Odori folk dancing open to all will be held at Tsukiji Honganji Temple in Chuo Ward from 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug 3, 4 and 5, and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 6. Many open-air stalls will be set up. In the event of rain, the event will be cancelled.

Aug. 4 & 5
Mitama Matsuri (souls festival) of Ikegami Honmonji Temple. A Bon Odori parade will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, and Bon folk dancing takes place every evening, from 7 to 9 pm. In the event of rain, the event will be postponed until the next day.

(1) Subway Toei Asakusa Line to Nishi-Magome? Station, then walk 10 minutes. (2) Tokyu Ikegami Line to Ikegami Station, then walk 10 minutes.


Aug. 5-8
Tanabata Matsuri (star festival) in Fussa, western Tokyo, about a 90-minute train ride from Tokyo Station. Festival features a samba parade from 7:15 to 8:30 pm on Aug. 5, a parade of floats and portable shrines from 3:30 to 6 p.m., and folk dancers from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Aug 6. "Wadaiko" drum beating will be performed by U.S. service members at Fussa City Hall on Aug. 8.

Aug. 5-9
Tanabata Matsuri (star festival) along the shopping street at the South Exit of Asagaya Station in Suginami Ward from 10 am to 10 pm. Various decorations made of paper streamers and strips of colored paper will please the eye.

Aug. 7

Aug. 7 & 8
Oshima Natsu Matsuri (summer festival) near Motomachi Port on Oshima Island. A 30-minute fireworks display will be held from 9 p.m. on Aug. 7 and 8 and many street stalls will be open on both days.

Access
About 1 hour & 45 minutes — 2 hours to 20 minutes by Tokai Kisen ferryboat from Takeshiba Pier to Oshima Island. From there, 20 minutes by bus to Motomachi bus stop. (To reach Takeshiba Pier: take the Yurikamome Line from Shimbashi Station to Takeshiba Station, then walk 1 minute to the pier, or the JR Yamanote Line to Hamamatsucho Station, then walk 7 minutes.)


Aug. 8
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) at Jingu Kyujo baseball stadium in Shibuya Ward 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. (10,000 pieces). Fireworks will follow concerts that start from 5:30 pm. Admission to the Nanshiki Kyujo ballpark, infront of Kaigakan (Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery), which is located near Jingu Kyujo, is 1,000 yen. Admission tickets for National Stadium, or for the Chichibunomiya Rugby & Football Ground is 2,000 yen. (Most of the admission tickets for Jingu Kyujo baseball stadium are already sold out. In the event of rain or strong wind, the display will be postponed until the next day.

Aug. 11 Nohryo Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) at Hachijojima Island, from 8 to 8
30 pm (about 1,000 fireworks.) In the event of rain or strong wind, the display will be postponed until the next day.

About 11 hours by Tokai Kisen boat from Takeshiba Pier to Hachijojima Island. (Yurikamome Line from Shimbashi Station to Takeshiba Station, then walk 1 minute to the pier, or JR Yamanote Line to Hamamatsucho Station, then walk 7 minutes to the pier.)


Aug. 13-15
Fukagawa Matsuri, festival of Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine in Koto Ward. Festival features drum performances starting at 5 pm during the festival, a "Shorinji kenpo" karate performance at 5 pm on Aug. 14, a "koto" Japanese harp performance at 5:30 pm on Aug. 15, and a kendo Japanese fencing tournament from 8:30 am on Aug. 15th. Many open-air stalls will be also set up.

Aug. 14
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) at Tokyo's Harumi Pier, from 7 to 8:20 pm (12,000 pieces). In the event of rain or strong wind, the display will be canceled.

Aug. 20-22
Azabu Juban Nohryo Matsuri. The Summer Festival of Azabu Juban Shopping Streets in Minato Ward features Bon Odori folk dancing from 7 to 9 p.m. and street vendors from 4 to 9 p.m. every evening.

(1) Subway Toei Oedo Line or Namboku Line to Azabujuban Station, then walk 1 minute. (2) Subway Hibiya Line or Toei Oedo Line to Roppongi Station, then walk 10 minutes.


Aug. 20-22
Annual Summer Festival of Suwa Shrine in Tachikawa, western Tokyo. This festival features a sumo tournament for children from 1 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 21, plus a "shishimai" lion dance from 4 p.m. on Aug. 21 and 22. Also on Aug. 22, there will be a parade of "mikoshi" (portable shrines) from 1 p.m. and Japanese drum beating and other events from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

JR Chuo Line to Tachikawa Station (South Exit), then walk 12 minutes.


Aug. 21 & 22
Bon Odori folk dancing open to all takes place at Chuo Koen (Shinjuku Central Park) in Shinjuku Ward from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Should it rain, the event will be canceled.

(1) Subway Marunouchi Line to Nishi-Shinjuku? Station, then walk 3 minutes. (2) JR or Subway Marunouchi Line to Shinjuku Station (West Exit), then walk 10 minutes. (3) Toei Subway Oedo Line to Tocho-mae Station, then walk 3 minutes.


Aug. 23-26
Summer Festival of Kameido Tenjin in Koto Ward. This festival features "takigikagura," or torch-lighted sacred dancing, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and "sato-kagura" from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 25. In the shrine precinct, 1,100 lanterns will be lit from 7 p.m. A portable shrine will parade the town from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 24. This shrine is famous for its arched "drum bridge" and purple wisteria, immortalized in Hiroshi Yoshida's 1927 print "Kameido."

Aug. 26-28
Awa Odori folk dancing similar to that of Tokushima Prefecture is presented with the participation of townspeople along the streets around Koenji Station in Suginami Ward. Dancing is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 26, and from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 and 28. Should it heavily rain, the folk dancing will be postponed until Aug. 29.

Aug. 28
Asakusa Samba Carnival will be held along Kaminarimon-Dori? Avenue and Umamichi-Dori? Avenue near Sensoji Temple in Taito Ward. The highlight of this event is a large parade with about 3,500 participants, including baton twirlers, brass bands and a dancing troupe from Brazil, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Aug. 28 & 29
Yosakoi Festival (folk dancing festival) similar to that of Kochi City in Shikoku will take place with the participation of about 6,000 people from all over Japan along the streets around Harajuku-Omotesando?, Meiji-Jingu?, Event Square in Yoyogi Park and Keyaki-Namiki-Dori? in front of NHK from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 28, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 29. July 30
Shonan Hiratsuka Fireworks Display, featuring 3,000 pieces, from 7:30 p.m. near the mouth of the Sagamihara River. In the event of rain, the fireworks will be postponed until July 31st.

From JR Hiratsuka Station's South Exit, take a bus bound for Suka Port and get off at the terminal bus stop.


July 31
Kosui Matsuri on Lake Ashi in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. In the evening, ceremonial rites take place on boats in the middle of the lake by priests and parishioners of Hakone Shrine. Lighted lanterns will be floated on the water and a fireworks display (4,000 pieces) is set for 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

From Odawara Station, take a bus (60 minutes) to Moto-Hakone? bus stop.


July 31 & Aug. 1
Minato Matsuri (port festival) in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, features parades by a brass band and Japanese folk dancers along Yokosuka-Chuo? Dori street from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on July 31. (The parade will be canceled in the event of rain). On Aug. 1, an 8,000-piece fireworks display will be presented at Shinko Port near Misaki and Umikaze parks from 7:40 to 8:30 p.m. Should it rain, the fireworks display will be postponed until the next day.

About 45 minutes from Shinagawa Station on the Keihin Kyuko Line to Yokosuka-Chuo? Station.


July 31-Aug. 2
Gion Matsuri in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture, features a parade, including small mikoshi (portable shrines) carried by children and one giant mikoshi carried by 40-50 adults from 9 a.m. to 9:30 pm on Aug. 1, and from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 2.

JR Mito Line to Kasama Station, from there 10 minutes by bus for Tomobe or Inari Jinja, then get off at Inari Jinja bus stop.


Aug. 1
Kojo-sai (lake festival) on the shores of Lake Sagami in Kanagawa Prefecture. Drum beating and other events from 5:30 p.m. and a fireworks display (5,000 pieces) from 7:30 to 8:50 p.m. are scheduled. Should it rain heavily, the fireworks display will be postponed until Aug. 2.

Access: JR Chuo Line to Sagamiko Station, then walk 10 minutes.

Aug. 2 & 3
Yugawara Yassa Matsuri features a fireworks display (about 2,500 pieces) on the shores of Yugawara Beach in Yugawara-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 8 to 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 3. (Should it rain, the display will be postponed until Aug. 6.) This is the biggest event of the year in Yugawara, which is located on the northeast corner of the Izu Peninsula (between Odawara and Atami). During the day, local fishermen parade their boats across the bay. A parade of portable shrines and "Yassa Odori" folk dancing is presented by the townspeople from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on both days.

Aug. 3
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) at Nishihama Beach in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.. Should it rain, the display will be postponed until Aug. 5.

Odakyu Enoshima Line to Katase-Enoshima? Station, then walk 5 minutes.


Aug. 3-5
Numata Matsuri in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, features many parades involving 15 mikoshi portable shrines, 20 portable shrines to be carried by children and more from Aug. 3 to 5. The highlight of this festival involves two special mikoshi with 4-meter-long masks of "Tengu" (a half-man creature of Japanese folklore with a long nose and red face), carried by 200 women, departing from Numata City Hall, parading through the city streets from 1:30 to 10:00 p.m. on Aug. 3 to 5.

JR Joetsu Line to Numata Station, from there, walk 15 minutes to Numata City Hall or Honcho-Dori? Street.


Aug. 5
Torii-yaki Matsuri (ceremony of the burning of a red-painted Shinto gate) on Lake Ashi is one of many events of the Hakone Ashinoko Summer Festival (lasting one week from July 31) in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. In the evening at 7:30 p.m., numerous lighted lanterns are set afloat and colorful fireworks are displayed until around 8:30 pm (about 3,000 pieces).

Access
1 hour by bus for Hakonemachi from Odawara Station, then get off at Hakonemachi bus stop.


Aug. 6-8
Mito Komon Matsuri in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, is highlighted by a fireworks display from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 6. The Citizen's Carnival in Mito takes place near the North Exit of JR Mito Station from 5 to 9 p.m. on Aug 7. A mikoshi parade will take place 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Shimoichi area, and from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Uwaichi area on Aug. 8.

Aug.6
Nikko Waraku Odori folk dancing open to all around the pond in the works of Furukawa Electric Company in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, from 7 to 10 p.m.

(1) 20 minutes by bus from Tobu Nikko Station, then get off at Kiyotaki bus stop. (2) Free special bus available on the day from Tobu Nikko Station to the festival site.


Aug. 6-8
Ayu Matsuri (trout festival) features a 10,000-piece fireworks display on the banks of the Sagami River in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug 7. Several other events are also scheduled.

Odakyu Line to Hon-Atsugi? Station, then walk 10-20 minutes.


Aug. 7
Suitengu Matsuri in Yorii-machi, Saitama Prefecture, 100 minutes by train ride from Ikebukuro Station. This festival feature a parade of beautifully decorated boats with lighted lanterns and a 4,000-piece fireworks display from 7 to 9 p.m. Should it rain, the fireworks display will be canceled.

(1) Tobu Tojo Line to Tamayodo Station or to Yorii Station, then walk 10 minutes. (2) JR Hakko Line or Chichibu Railway to Yorii Station, then walk 15 minutes.


Aug. 7 & 8
Tanabata Matsuri (star festival) in Irumagawa, Saitama Prefecture. Various decorations of paper streamers and strips of colored paper will please the eye. A fireworks display will be held from 8 to 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 (1,800 pieces). Should it rain, the fireworks will be postponed until Aug. 8.

1 hour by Seibu Shinjuku Line (originating at Seibu-Shinjuku? Station) to Sayamashi Station.


Aug. 7
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) on the banks of the Sakawagawa River in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This 5,000-piece display attracts about 30,000 spectators. Should it rain, the fireworks display will be postponed.

JR Tokaido Line to Kamonomiya Station (South Exit), then walk 15 minutes.


Aug. 8
Sarugakyo Matsuri at Sarugakyo Onsen (hot springs) in Niiharu-mura, Gunma Prefecture, features a presentation of "daidai kagura" (local festival music) from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. and a fireworks display from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

(1) JR Joetsu Line to Gokan Station; from there, 30 minutes by bus to Sarugakyo Onsen bus stop. (2) JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line to Jomo-Kogen? Station; from there, 30 minutes by bus to Sarugakyo Onsen bus stop.


Aug. 10
Hanabi Taikai (fireworks display) at Yuigahama Beach in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. (about 2,800 pieces). Should it rain, the fireworks display will be postponed until Aug. 11.

JR Yokosuka Line to Kamakura Station, then walk 15 minutes.


Aug. 14
Saitama City Fireworks Display, featuring about 15,000 pieces, is scheduled from 7 to 9 pm at Arakawa Sogo Undo Koen. In the event of heavy rain, the fireworks display will be postponed.

Access
JR Keihin Tohoku Line Omiya Station, Kita Urawa Station or Saitama Shintoshin Station; then 20 minutes by bus.


Aug. 15
Funadama Matsuri at Nagatoro Gorge in Chichibu-gun, Saitama Prefecture. Two boats with lighted lanterns aboard are set adrift on the river at 5:40 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. "Toro nagashi" (floating of lighted lanterns) will take place from 7 to 7:20 p.m. and a fireworks display (about 3,500 pieces) from 7:30 pm will take place. Should it rain, it will be postponed until Aug. 16.

Chichibu Tetsudo Line to Nagatoro Station, then walk 5 minutes.


Aug. 16
Daimonji-yaki (bonfire event) on Mount Myojogatake and a fireworks display in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. (about 3,000 pieces). Should it rain, these events will be postponed until Aug. 17.

Hakone Tozan Railway (originating at Odawara) to Gora Station.


Aug. 16
Oshoronagashi (floating of boats), associated with the Bon festival, will be held at Mitohama Beach in Miura, Kanagawa Prefecture, from around 6 a.m. Three "Oshorobune" straw-made boats, each 8 meters long, are to be built by young people, while townspeople gather at the beach, bringing miniature oshorobune or offerings. Around 8 a.m., the boats will be towed out to sea and set adrift by town's children.

Keihin Kyuko Line to Misakiguchi Station, then walk 20 minutes.


Aug. 21 & 22
Yokohama Carnival is a lively, sprawling event staged in Yokohama. A "Hamakoi Odori" dance contest and exhibitions will be held from noon to 7:30 pm on Aug. 21 at Sawatarichuo Koen Park. The highlight of this festival is a procession of a dancing troupe and mikoshi portable shrines in the evening from 4 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 22.

JR Tokaido Line, JR Negishi Line (Keihin Tohoku Line) or Tokyu Toyoko Line to Yokohama Station (West Exit).


Aug. 23 & 24
Tsunabi Fireworks peculiar to Ina-machi, Ibaraki Prefecture, will be displayed in the precincts of Atago Shrine, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Takaoka Atago Shrine on Aug. 23 and at Obari Atago Shrine on Aug. 24.

(1) JR Joban Line to Toride Station; from there 50 minute by bus for Yatabe and get off at Takaoka bus stop, then walk 5 minutes to Takaoka Atago Shrine. (2) 50 minutes by bus for Yatabe from JR Toride Station; get off at Obari bus stop, then walk 5 minutes to Obari Atago Shrine.


Aug. 26
Shishimai (lion dance) in the compound of Mitsumine Shrine, Otaki-mura, Saitama Prefecture. Eighteen different lion dances are performed by young men using six lion's heads and long-nosed masks every 30 minutes between 4 and 6:30 a.m., between 8:30 and 9 a.m., and three or four times between 9 a.m. and noon, and between 1 and 5 p.m.

90 minutes from Seibu Ikebukuro Station by Seibu Railways' "Red Arrow" limited express to Seibu-Chichibu? Station. Walk 5 minutes to Ohanabatake Station. From there take Chichibu Tetsudo Railway 25 minutes to Mitsumineguchi Station. From there, it is 15 minutes by bus to Owa bus stop and then an 8-minute ropeway ride to Mitsumine Sancho Station, then walk 15 minutes to Mitsumine Shrine.
